* Use your notebook or sketchpad to sketch out a preparatory drawing of images you plan to render on the computer. This is an important component of visualizing and planning your work, no matter what medium you choose for the final product. Trying to create a cohesive finished work without visualization, planning and preparation, is usually a frustrating, tiresome experience. Sketches on paper for final projects, are a requirement for the final grade. Do not worry about the quality or the sketches - I am not grading based upon the ability to draw, only verifying for evidence of forethought and planning. Scanned Image Requirements: Any image used in this class must be the student's own - either drawn, painted, or photographed by the student. Commercial images e.g. magazine photos or clip art from CD-ROM, are not acceptable. If you feel that you absolutely need to use such an image, you must consult with me first for approval. Back to Top Art 266 Project Descriptions 1. Basic file creation / managing files : Open Photoshop, create a new file, save it to disk, save a copy of the file ( Save As ), then move the file to your removable media in Windows Explorer. ( 2.5 points ) 2. Managing files, part 2 : You will move files distributed by the instructor on a floppy disk or CD, to My Documents ( 2.5 points ) * Final project proposal: this is a component of the final project and is required for students wishing to continue with the class. Due at the end of Week 3. Here are details. 3. Saved Selection / Vignette Border Project. Worth 5 points. 4. Tonal / Color Correction Project. Worth 10 points. 5. Artist's Image Project. Worth 10 points. 6. Layers Project. Worth 10 points. No Recycling ! While recycling used materials to preserve the environment is commendable, the same can not be said of utilizing the same image for more than one assignment. The reason you're being assigned several major projects is to stimulate your creativity and challenge your imagination. Therefore, DO NOT use an image for the layers project or one of the final projects, and then attempt to use it again for the other final project. A project will not be accepted if it contains an image already graded for another assignment. Final Projects Art 266 has a final project assignment, with a discussion component: 1. Landscape or Still-Life: Use scanned images and other sources to compose a picture in either of these two historically-significant genres. A landscape generally means an image of the outdoors. A still-life is a collection of inanimate objects, flowers, fruits, etc. The objects may or may not have some special significance. Worth 25 points. 2. Self-portrait: An interpretation as to who you are. Final image does not need to be a representational image, but it should convey to the viewer some aspects of who you are as an individual, or how you see yourself in relation to the world. You can incorporate any strong political or religious beliefs, philosophy of life, hobbies or interests, as well as people or things that have strongly influenced your life. Weekly Schedule Week 1 : Course objectives, requirements, syllabus, phone tree, supplies. Overview of basic Windows procedures; introduction to Photoshop . Exercise 1: Basic file creation and manipulation. Homework : obtain supplies & text. Copy syllabus to own media, then read syllabus: sections on Requirements, Lab Policy. Readings Week 2 : Exercise 2: Use Photoshop to create an image using a minimum of three tools, three colors, and three pulldown menus. Save to disk and submit for grade. In-class: More Photoshop. Homework : Schedule lab time for completion of exercises. Start looking for an art show from which to do a written critique of one displayed artwork. Readings Week 3 : Final project proposals are due. 5 points will be deducted from your final grade if proposals are not submitted today. Scanner Demo; import/export, use of scanned images & images from CD-ROM. Discussion of copyright issues. Homework : Find images to bring next week to scan. These should be your own photos, not from magazines. Readings Week 4 : Quickmask, Printed Output; transmitted/reflected light, RGB vs. CMYK; Painter tools. Homage to…: Scan an image created by an historically-important artist, and incorporate it into a work. Scanned images should be adjusted for tonal values and /or color - corrected. Readings Week 5 : Photoshop: Layers and Channels. Exercise 4: Create a new image or combine previous images. Two major projects to work on for the remainder of the quarter: ( Use the rest of the term to create these. ) 1. Self-Portrait 2. Open Theme. Homework : FINISH ALL LATE WORK ( FOR NEXT WEEK ). Readings Week 6 : MID-QTR. = ALL LATE WORK DUE AT THE END OF THIS PERIOD - NO EXCEPTIONS. Exercises to this point, must be submitted today by the end of the class period, for a grade of C or higher. RUBBER STAMP; FILTERS Readings Week 7 : Work session - Continue work on projects. Readings Week 8: Work Session. Readings Week 9 : " Works in progress" discussion - participation is required and is graded. Readings Week 10 : Work session ( If quarter is 12 weeks, WEEK 11 is also a work period ) Week 11 : FINAL PROJECTS DUE. Presentation and discussion of finished works. ( Due on Week 12 if quarter is 12 weeks ) Late work : One letter grade will be deducted for each week past the due date Note: the above schedule is tentative.
