Julie Sutherland Gibbs, Ph.D.
Professor, Biology
After graduating from Glenbard West High School, I traveled south to Johnson City, TN. At Milligan, I completed a biology degree and earned a secondary teaching credential.M.S., University of Chicago
At the University of Chicago, I worked in the Drug Abuse Research Center while completing the coursework for a Ph.D. in physiology and pharmacology. I enjoyed the lab, but knew my primary career interest was classroom teaching, so I left Chicago for a doctoral program in science education after completing the M.S.Ph.D., Ohio State University
My dissertation research at OSU examined the relationship between elements of a student's learning style and their success in a college biology course. As a graduate assistant, I supervised science education majors in their field experiences in the schools of Columbus, Ohio.
Prior to graduate school, I taught high school biology in Los Angeles. After completing my Ph.D. in 1991, I was hired full time at COD. I moved to part time in 1992 in order to care for my two sons. In the fall of 1999, I was extremely pleased to be able to return to the college on a full time basis.
