2012 Spring Field Study Program

National Flower "Sakura (Cherry)" in Japan: Kyoto, Nara, and Osaka

Classroom meeting: Thursdays: March 15 and 22    5:30pm~7:50pm  (Attendance for both classes are required!)

This 10-day field trip to Kyoto, Japan examines its cultural continuity. A unique feature includes visiting major temples and shrines as well as imperial palace and villa, observing traditional theaters and ceremonies, participating some cultural practice sessions.  This is a great cultural experience led by a full-time native Japanese instructor originally from Kyoto, old capital of Japan. This 11-day field trip to Kyoto, Japan examines its tradition and culture. A unique feature includes visiting major temples and shrines as well as imperial palace and villa, observing traditional theaters and ceremonies, participating some cultural practice sessions. The field experience takes place 3/30/2010-4/8/2010. A fee of $2,799 includes air, most domestic transportation, entrance fee, performance ticket, cultural activity fee, and accommodation with breakfast. Other meals are not included.

The instructor will help make an arrangement for those who want to extend the trip in Japan after completing this field study program.

Students are advised that this trip would require some walking in streets and steps. (Ask Shingo Satsutani if you have some concern about this.)

Tentative Itinerary for Field Trip to JAPAN (Example!)

March 30 (Fri) Meeting at O’Hare International Airport.  Leaving for Kansai International Airport (Osaka).

March 31 (Sat) Arriving in Osaka (KIX). Transfer to Kyoto by Airport bus. Hotel check-in

April 1 (Sun) Yasaka Shrine, Maruyama Park, Kiyomizu Temple and Sanjusangen-do Temple

April 2 (Mon) Ryoan-ji Temple (The rock garden) and Kinkakuji Temple (The Golden Pavilion) through Ritsumeikan University (Shingo’s University).

April 3 (Tue) Arashiyama Area (Tenryu-ji Temple, Togetsu Bridge, bamboo walk), Hirano Shrine, Kitano Tenmangu Shrine (Flea Market)

April 4 (Wed) Nijo Castle.  Nishijin Textile center, Ginkaku-ji Temple (The Silver Pavilion), Philosoper's trail. Gion Corner at night (Tradtional Japanese show: Tea, Flower, Gagaku, Kyomai, Kyogen, Bunraku thearter)

April 5 (Thu) Daikaku-ji Temple. Cultural activities such as brush calligraphy in Daikaku-ji. Kyoto Handicraft center.

April 6 (Fri) Half-day trip to Nara. (Todai-ji Temple, Kasuga Shrine, Nara Park, etc.) Kyoto Station Area. Heian Jingu Shrine.

April 7 (Sat) Osaka Castle and its Cherry Garden.  Byodo-in Temple (The Phoenix Pavilion) in Uji-city

April 8 (Sun) Transfer to Kansai International Airport by Airport Express Bus. Leaving for Chicago

N.B. This scheduling should be comfortable even though it looks too hectic!

Notes: Students are required to complete the travel journal during the field trip as well as other assignments.
