2010 Fall Field Study Program
Christmas in Western Japan: Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Kobe, Himeji, Okayama, Hiroshima, etc.
Humanities : 3-semster hours Syllabus with detailed information about course assignments and requirement will be available upon request.
Classroom meeting: Tuesdays: November 30 and December 7 5:30pm~7:50pm (Attendance for both classes are required!)
This 11-day field trip takes students to several popular cultural city in Japan, such as Kyoto where traditional Japan and modern Japan peacefully coexist. KYOTO was the capital of Japan until 1868, offers traditional Japanese culture through visiting various temples and shrines as well as observing traditional theaters and ceremonies. Osaka: castle, business, fashion...Nara: World largest wooden structure, deer park... Himeji: White heron castle.... Okayama: castle and park... Hiroshima: Peace park and floating shrine gate... This is a great cultural experience led by a full-time native Japanese instructor of College of DuPage originally from Kyoto, Japan. The field experience takes place 12/17/2010-12/27/2010. A fee of $2,999 includes air, most domestic transportation, entrance fee, performance ticket, cultural activity fee, and accommodation with breakfast. Other meals are not included. The instructor will help making an arrangement for those who want to extend the trip in Japan after completing this field study program.
Participants are advised that this trip would require some walking in streets and steps. (Ask Shingo Satsutani if you have some concern about this.)

Dec. 17 (Fri) Meeting at O’Hare Terminal 1 at 10:00am. Leaving for Osaka/Kansai
Dec. 18 (Sat) Arriving in Osaka. Transfer to Downtown Kyoto. Check-inn Hotel. This is the base for this trip!
Dec. 19 (Sun) Himeji Castle and Kobe (Bullet Train)
Dec. 20 (Mon) Hiroshima Trip: Peace park and Miyajima (Bullet Train)
Dec. 21 (Tue) Okayama: Castle, Korakuen Park...
Dec. 22 (Wed) Sanjusangendo Temple and Osaka Castle.
Dec. 23 (Thu) Golden Pavilion, Rock Garden, Ritsumeikan University, Yasaka Shrine, Gion Corner (Traditional Japanese arts such as, Kyogen, Bunraku, Kabuki, Gagaku, Kyomai, etc.)
Dec. 24 (Fri) Arashiyama Tenryu-ji Temple, Bamboo Forest, Kitano Tenmangu Shrine Flea Market
Dec. 25 (Sat) Nara Deer Park, Todai-ji temple, Nishijin Textile Center
Dec. 26 (Sun) Kiyomizu-temple, Kodai-ji temple,...
Dec. 27 (Mon) Transfer to Kansai International Airport (KIX). Leaving for Chicago.
N.B. This scheduling should be comfortable even though it looks too hectic!
