How to recognize scholarly sources

Scholarly sources are articles and books written for academic purposes.  They are not written for a general audience.  Scholarly materials are written by experts in their fields of study, not professional writers or reporters.  Scholarly articles are published in peer-reviewed (refereed) journals.  These can be found in the library’s online databases.  Scholarly books are published by university presses and independent scholarly publishers, such as Routledge.  Scholarly sources usually contain footnotes.

Checklist:

1)   Identify the author.  Does the author have a university affiliation?

2)   Identify the publisher.  Is it a university press?

3)   Is the piece from a scholarly journal?

4)   Does the source have footnotes?
