My Film Memoir

Choose one of the following two options:

A)   In a 4-5 page essay, tell the story of a significant event in your life that somehow coincides with seeing a film.

B)    In a 4-5 page essay, tell the story of how a film has had a significant impact on your life.

Regardless which option you choose follow these instructions:

¨     Be sure to tell the story of what happened to you, and do not merely summarize or describe the film.

¨     “Every story has a purpose” (The Bedford Reader).  What are you trying to convey with your story?  Focus your story around one idea, theme, or angle.  Make sure the scenes of the event you choose and the details of the film you describe revolve around or advance this focus.

¨     Imagine your audience is your fellow classmates.  If you expect that your classmates would have seen the film in question, less background on the film is needed than if you think your classmates would not have seen the film.

¨     Despite the personal nature of this assignment, use language that is appropriate for formal writing.

¨     “Details have to be carefully selected.  Feel no grim duty to include every perceptible detail” (The Bedford Reader).  Your descriptive passages should serve to advance your focus.  Your details should be selected and arranged to convey this focus.

¨     Your grade does NOT depend on the amount of drama inherent in your subject.  Do not feel pressured to write about events you do not feel comfortable writing about and sharing with me and your fellow classmates.  Good writing is not what you write about but how you write about what you write about.

¨     Remember to use spell check and to proofread your paper before you post it.
