The Definition/Exemplification Paper

1)     Choose a film, television, or music genre and get it Okayed by me.

2)     Identify the elements of that genre:  the themes, the patterns, the iconography, the characters (if film or television), the techniques, the audience expectations, etc.  Identify elements that tend NOT to appear in that genre.  Identify the minor variations within the genre.  Define the extent and the limits of that genre.

3)     Choose a film, show, or song and analyze how it fits into and/or subverts that genre.

4)     Consider how such an analysis helps you gain a greater understanding of the film, show, or song and/or the genre.

5)     YOUR PAPER MUST BE ORGANIZED AROUND A STRONG THESIS STATEMENT.

6)     Assume your audience has seen the film or show or has heard the song but has not examined it closely, and, thus, you should include any needed information to prompt memory.  For a song, you should include a copy of the lyrics.

7)     Your paper should end in a strong conclusion that places your thesis in a larger context, affirms its significance, says something further about the subject, in other words, a conclusion that does more than just repeat the thesis.

8)     Pay attention to tense.  Remember, when describing events that take place within a film or television show, to use present tense.

9)     Pay attention to proper grammar, especially proper sentences.

10) Watch paragraph development.  Make sure each of your paragraphs develops an idea and only one idea.  Make sure your paragraphs are logically organized.  Make sure you have strong transitions between paragraphs and between sentences within paragraphs.
