Texture

Requirements

One 6” square texture collage

Collage elements must be flat to the base plane

One finished pencil contour drawing of texture collage
1” square samples, one of each texture

Presentation

Compose required drawing and collage into a neat, orderly, and visibly interesting presentation
All parts should be titled
All lettering must use constructed guidelines
All drawings must be securely mounted
Layout should use tools for accurate and precise layout of drawings and titles
Presentations may use multiple panels no panel may be larger than 24” x 36”
The following are always unacceptable

Visible tape or staples (these should probably never be used at all)
Poster board
Visible glue
Smudges
Uneven edges
Protruding points or sharp edges
Wordart, clipart or any other canned graphic element.
Construction paper

Process
	Create a 6” square texture collage Place collage with a fixed, directional light source that clarifies textures Practice by drawing 1” square samples of your textures Layout your collage at full size Complete textures Do not try to complete drawing in one sitting

Objectives

Upon completion of this assignment students will be able to:

To be able to create an interesting, cohesive two dimensional composition
To understand the compositional principles of axis, hierarchy, regulating lines, rhythm, symmetry and balance
To be able to explore a variety of techniques and media to represent textures
To be able to evaluate how textures are seen
To be able to generate accurate, hand-drawn textures using a variety of media.

Design Goals
	Designs should employ tonal values and form to enhance the original compositions Tonal values should be used to establish a consistent, believable 3-dimensional spatial environment The design should exhibit depth and movement Designs should use a variety of both flat and curved surfaces

Problem

To produce a single texture drawing of your texture collage. The drawing should be accurate and detailed with a variety of media.

Constraints:

Drawing will be on large drawing paper at actual size
Any media may be used
Collage should be monochromatic
Collage must contain at least 5 texture

Introduction

In your previous assignments you have mastered a variety of techniques to accurately represent what you see according to various graphic conventions. In this assignment you will take that process of seeing to a nearly microscopic level and then develop a believable representation of what you see. We understand texture beyond our actual ability to see it. Our perception is enhanced by our experience of texture as well as the actual information that our eyes communicate to our brains. In this assignment you will have to evaluate the textures in your composition to determine what are the visual clues you use to understand them.
