Process

- Select an area to draw. Downtown Glen Ellyn, near the train station, has some excellent opportunities to draw – buildings, details. When possible the class will meet at an appropriate location. Verify date, time and location with instructor.
- First study the various views available to you and identify sketch opportunities.
- Analyze which are the controlling lines of your sketch
- For a building these are likely to be the edges of the structure
- For a streetscape they are likely to be the curbs and rooftops that meet at the vanishing point(s)
- For a detail they are likely to be the profile and edges of the element
- Begin drawing your sketch. Use pencil construction lines to establish vanishing points and overall scale and proportion
- Continue to add detail and develop your drawing using an appropriate medium

Problem

To produce five sketches from direct observation of: a building, building details, and groups of buildings. You must include in your group of five at least one of each type of subject, the other two are your choice. The drawings will use a variety of media including pencil, pen and conte crayon. You must include at least one drawing in each media; the other two are your choice.
Constraints:
- Drawings will be from direct observation.
- All drawings must be from a downtown, no residential buildings.
- All drawings must include the address.
- Each drawing will take a single page in your sketchbook
- The five images will be comparable in scope. Larger views, such as streetscapes, will show less detail, while more focused drawings, such as details, will show as much detail as possible
