| Chemistry 085 is designed for students who have not taken High School chemistry and want to take Chemistry 111. Chemistry 111 has prerequisites of High School algebra and High School Chemistry or Chemistry 085. Students who plan to take Chemistry 105 instead of Chemistry 111 do not need to take Chemistry 085. This course involves the study of numbers and number systems, the metric system and conversions, graphing, algebra, dimensional analysis, density, physical and chemical properties of matter, symbols of elements, formula writing, balancing equations and stoichiometry. This is a computer enhanced course. The course consists of both laboratory and classroom work. Both components are essential to successful completion of the course |
Objectives : Develop awareness of basic math and chemical computational skills Identify elements by symbols and names Apply basic arithmetic and algebraic skills to laboratory measurements Convert measurements between the English and Metric systems Graph laboratory data in a linear format ad use the completed graph for predictions Use dimensional analysis for conversions and problem solving Write formulas for the common compounds Balance simple equations for basic chemical reactions Perform mole calculations
