Objectives

This set of lessons starts us off. Here we waste no time getting comfortable reading and writing in our new on-line environment. We then move right along into ideas about the special nature of reading literature and writing about it. This unit may be one you will return to throughout the quarter since it will provide you with readings and activities you may want to explore after you have read more literature. It will also review some of the background for how to write about literature which you will want to review when you get ready to write your responses and essays.

This unit also asks you to do several Internet activities to be sure you are able to accomplish the mechanical tasks of the course. At the same time, it introduces you to the idea of reading literature as opposed to other sorts of texts. We are all used to reading informative material; we may be very used to reading literature; but not many of us are used to doing either or both on a computer. You should spend no more than a week on these three lessons. See the Calendar for more specific suggestions for pace.
