Quite simply, I want every student with whom I come in contact to maximize his or her personal goals and learning. I believe a teacher is a facilitator whose job is to create a supportive learning environment and provide course work designed to "stretch" the students reach. But learning is a pro active activity. Ultimately, the responsibility resides with the student.
Learning should be "hands on." I assume students can read textbooks and web pages and work exercises on their own. My job is to select resources and assignments in a way to progressively develop the student's knowledge base, to provide prompt and thoughtful feedback, and to use class time productively.
I believe in proactive learning. This means the primary learning has to come from the student. While I will spend as much time as necessary reviewing assignments, my classroom activities tend to be outside the scope of textbook reading and assignments. I believe students learn concepts by "doing" as well as reading. If you are looking for someone to read a textbook to you, please look elsewhere.

I have had a varied career history. My first full time position was a sixth grade teacher. I have been a Market Research Senior Analyst and Project Director for a major consumer goods company, a Programmer (as far back as Fortran!), and a consultant on Web Design and database development. For the past several years, I have managed a small business. I have taught college courses part-time since 1973 and have been teaching at COD since 1998.
