The Literary Apprentice

Reading forms of literature

Below you will find the starting links for an introduction to some of the traditional formal elements of our genres <http://dept.english.upenn.edu/%7Ejlynch/Terms/Temp/genre.html> of literature.

Most introductory courses in literature will introduce you to these ideas and perhaps these pages will provide a useful supplement. The real question is how can an understanding of forms, types and conventions increase the intensity of your understanding and appreciation of literature's value? Noticing and appreciating formal aspects of an art allows you to make decisions about how you might read it better, more responsively and more responsibly. The "essays" these links lead you to are by no means the last report on any of these subjects, merely initial offerings.
