The Literary Apprentice
    Literary Response Questionnaire (LRQ)

Here you can try David S. Miall and Don Kuiken's Literary Response Questionnaire (LRQ): This survey will ask you a series of questions about your feelings and attitudes toward literature. When you complete it, you will receive a set of scores that will profile your responses along seven dimensions. Each score will be explained so that you can reflect on the literary values, beliefs and predilections it measures.

In their thorough explanation of the development of this questionnaire, in the article, "Aspects of Literary Response: A New Questionnaire," (Research in the Teaching of English 29:1 (February 1995) 37-58), Miall and Kuiken assert that their "attempt [has been] to create a tool that would not prejudge level of sophistication for the aspects identified. . . . Contrasting approaches to reading, at least as measured by the LRQ, may have different but equally valued consequences (e. g., appreciation of the author's style, recognition of personal feelings), and our objective is to facilitate understanding of such variety rather than to identify what might constitute the most competent approach to literature" (39). This means that if you take this survey, you should not infer from it your ability to read. Instead it is more oriented to discover what you value as you read.

The survey will develop indicators of more subjective states of mind that relate to patterns of belief or ways in which you do or do not respond to aspects of the experience of reading literature.

People vary along these dimensions and such variety is to be expected.

If you are interested in learning how you will respond to these questions, please go on. Once you enter the test, follow the directions there. When you are finished, you will be sent to a page which will help you interpret your scores. (Technical note. Should you find the text of the questions overlapping with the text of the directions, go to your Text Size Option in your browser and select Medium text or smaller.)

Enter the LRQ.
