PERSONAL STATEMENT:

Society operates at a tremendous speed with regard to work, home and education. In order to slow down this process (often a combination of visual overload supported by face-paced sound bites and not enough time to really synthesize information) we need to focus more on improving the overall quality of our lives. An important aspect of this quality revolves around our living and working environments. This is why the public needs Interior Designers. The professionally educated Interior Designer addresses many of these environments within the scope of tasks or services they support.

My approach to Interior Design education is in the role of communicator and teacher. One who can provide insight to the necessary classes and/or skills contributing to the greater "body of knowledge" and how it relates to the overall quality of life within the built environment.

The vast amount of career choices, within the field of Interior Design, also contributes to the need of a greater public understanding of what an educated Interior Designer does while designing functional yet aesthetically pleasing interiors. Please review the following short definition (or visit the Interior Design Marketing page for a more expanded version) regarding the profession of Interior Design. Hopefully, this will help clarify the responsibilities of a professional designer.

INTERIOR DESIGN SHORT DEFINITION:

  • The Professional Interior Designer is qualified by education, experience, and examination to enhance the function and quality of interior spaces.
  • For the purpose of improving the quality of life, increasing productivity, and protecting the health, safety, and welfare of the public, the Professional Interior Designer:
  • Analyzes the client's needs, goals, and life and safety requirements.
  • Integrates findings with knowledge of interior design; formulates preliminary design concepts that are appropriate, functional, and aesthetic.
  • Develops and presents final design recommendations through appropriate presentation media; prepares working drawings and specifications for non-load bearing interior construction, materials, finishes, space planning, furnishings, fixtures, and equipment.
  • Collaborates with professional services of other licensed practitioners in the technical areas of mechanical, electrical, and load-bearing design as required for regulatory approval.
  • Prepares and administers bids and contract documents as the client's agent.
  • Reviews and evaluates design solutions during implementation and upon completion.
