Short Assignment Four: Comedy in Film, a short analysis of genre
In a 2-3 page paper that draws heavily on specific scenes, characterizations, and action, discuss one of the following questions as it pertains to either "The Freshman" or "Unfaithfully Yours":
1. Does this film fall clearly into one of the subgenres of comedy, or is it a hybrid? Explain the chief characteristics of the subgenre(s) that are most clearly manifested in this movie, using specific examples.
2. Differentiate the film from its genre: How does it follow or thumb its nose at the comedic rule(s) in which it operates? How do these variations of specific conventions or formulas help you understand the meaning of this film, remembering that even a comic film is somehow commenting on some aspect of society or culture.
3. Consider whether the cultural or historical context (larger "discussion" that surrounds a film and helps to determine its interpretation) seems to shade and shape the genre formulas used in the film. How does the intersection of a specific culture (exs: mob culture, collegiate culture, suburban values, Christianity, apartment dwellers) and a film genre help illuminate the meaning of the movie?
