Your next assignment is this:
Write an essay that informs readers about a concept in a highly focused way. The paper should atempt to interest readers, follow a logical plan, and use clear definitions. Also, you should use at least three different writing strategies to help explain your concept (such as classification, process narration, comparison and contrast, cause and effect, narrative example) and at least one source outside of yourself; that is, you will need to at least a bit of outside reading and cite it correctly.
Explaining a Concept: Introductory activity
Get together with two other students and select a concept to explain as a group. Here are some samples you may use:
| mass hysteria | photosynthesis | absolute value |
| gross domestic product | maturity | eminent domain |
| glass ceiling | establishment of a democratic government | mise-en-scene |
| stereotyping | organization | percussion |
| scapegoat | disaster | healing |
or come up with your own, but do it quickly. Now as a group
1. Write working definition of the concept (probably narrowing it to one aspect or point of view)
2. Show how your concept "works".
3. Divide your concept into categories.
4. Compare your concept to something else
you may choose other methods of development if they suggest themselves more easily.
Type these up (1 per group) and make sure to bring them to class on Tuesday.
