HOMEWORK: TUESDAY/THURSDAY
For Thursday, Sept. 23: Read pp.38-45 and 57-72. Write on the following topics:
1.What kinds of research did the writers of both pieces have to do?
2. Speculate about what counts as a "fact."
Choose a listing from the Harper's index as your first subject of inquiry..
Tuesday Sept 28. Begin to write the Harper's Index paper. Don't begin by researching. Begin by answering the questions on the prompt in your syllabus. Write everything you know or think you understand about the issue already--THEN you will know what further information or support you need.
Read EARTHQUAKE NEWS p. 138-150. Can you find a structure for the essay? What kind of logic did the author use putting his essay together?
Thursday Sept 30. You will need a draft of your Harper's Index essay, beginning to end. Remember a draft is just that--a complete but unpolished attempt to state and develop your ideas on the topic.
For Tuesday Oct.5: Begin revising your draft, using the "revision help" in the "readings" section of the website. Also, look at COD Library's wonderful research and MLA help. Use it for citing your sources. We will have a peer critique session today . Your paper will be due on Thursday Oct. 7 with all drafts, critiques and homework.i

Thursday Oct. 7: your revised paper, including drafts, notes, critique all gathered in a folder, is due today. Also read "The Cave" (p.263) and "Mary Kay: American Dream in a Bottle" p. 269
Tuesday Oct. 12: Have your artifact selected. Complete the pre-writing exercise from the Readings section of the website about your selection.
Thursday, Oct. 14: read "Snake Handling and Redemption" p. 403 Begin writing your paper. A draft will be due a week from Thursday.
Thursday Oct. 21: Bring your draft to class for peer critique. If you are having problems, contact me or better, bring the draft to my office hours.
Thursday, Oct. 28 Your papers will be due Tuesday. Review the assignment and see how close your paper comes to fulfilling it! Write out your revising strategy.
Tuesday Nov 2. Your papers are due today. All drafts, critiques, exercises, notes in folder. Also, read "Let Them Eat Fat" p.104 What techniques does Critser use to present the argument? Do you accept it?
For Thursday, Nov4 : Read "Shocking Pictures" pp.348-top of 357. Read Case Study 26 pp.358-360 Read "The Boston Photographs" p365-369. We will write on the issue in the lab.
Tuesday Nov. 9 Read p.253 "Life Online." Indicate in writing where/how the writer exhibits the following traits of academic inqiry: suspending judgment, thinking dialectically (dialectic: the art or practice of arriving at the truth by the exchange of logical arguments), asking questions, taking responsibility for one's ideas, and tolerating ambiguity.)
