First computer lab:

Choose one of the assigned readings (either Tao Ch'ien or Confucius) and choose one of the following exercises from Writing Analytically to write out, analytically for today:

1. Comparing and Contrasting one reading with another (pp.62-64.) To get started begin with the Try This suggestion at the end of the exercise, substituting the assigned readings for the book's suggestions. You do not have to write elegantly or even in paragraphs; at some points you may wish to make lists, digressions, charts to help clarify your observations.

When you are finished with the three steps,  write a paragraph or two summarizing what may be significant in what you have discovered through this process.

2.Procedure for uncovering Assumptions (pp.65-67.) Choose one of the readings only (or even a section of one of the readings) if you choose this exercise.  Go through the four steps, writing out your ideas and observations fully for each part.  You do not have to write elegantly or even in paragraphs; at some points you may wish to make lists, digressions, charts to help clarify your observations.

When you are finished with all four steps, write a paragraph or two summarizing your thoughts about the reading and/or the process (what you have learned through this writing exercise.)  You may want to review the meaning of "assumptions" by reading "Uncovering assumptions in a Reading" on p.64.  As you work through the assumptions, keep in mind what assumptions of your own may influence your reading and understanding of the piece.
