Fallacy practice sheet

Identify the correct argumentative fallacy.

1)      Why do so many high school students receive very low grades?  The answer is that it must be that the teachers do not teach well or students need more sleep in order to function properly.

2)      Some African tribes used to practice cannibalism.  Thus, today, all African tribes have some members whose ancestors were cannibals.

3)      Youth from the late 1950s to the 1960s rebelled against WWI generation’s rules and morals because of rock and roll.  Many song lyrics called for a revolution.

4)      Our right to vote is democratic because the people govern voting.

5)      People who do not believe in the choice of abortion do so because they think people will use abortion as birth control, believe life begins as soon as conception, and that it is a form of murder.  Thus, pro-lifers are against any type of murder or killing and the death penalty.

6)      The advancement of technology has cut off people from communicating with each other.  Thus, society has forgotten how to relate to each other.

7)      Freedom is the right to be free to choose the paths in one’s life.

8)      Look at the way he shovels in his food.  He eats red meat everyday.  That’s why he had a stroke.

9)      Polls suggest that the Liberals will form a majority government, so one may as well vote for them instead of throwing away one’s vote.

10)  I’ve worked so hard and tried to turn things in on time.  I’m just doing six things at once, and I had to put my education on hold.  But I’ll try really hard to make up everything.  So just give me a break.

11)  I can’t believe you don’t believe me.  You’ve got to be a dictator if you don’t accept that excuse.

12)  Since people have flown the Confederate flag since the Civil War, people should be allowed to do it today, regardless of the symbolism it conveys to African-Americans.
