Basic Features of an Evaluation Essay
| It makes a judgment. | |
| It tries to convince readers that the judgment is reasonable. | |
| It bases its judgment on standards appropriate to its subject. | |
| It strives to show that it fully understands its subject. | |
| It gives reasons for its judgment. | |
| It supports its reasons with evidence and examples. |
Typical Problems With This Essay:
| The subject is too broad. | |
| The essay describes the subject or merely identifies its strong and weak points but does not express a clear judgment based on evidence. | |
| The judgment is overstated, without appropriate qualification or clarification. | |
| The argument consists of a string of unsupported value judgments. | |
| The essay fails to provide enough evidence about the subject to be convincing. | |
| The essay falls back on advertising language or PR style. | |
| The comparison or contrast is not developed. Instead, the writer merely asserts that one thing is better than the other without giving examples or reasons. |
