Wed, Jan. 9. Read Chinua Achebe's "Girls at War" p. 10. Write a journal response, and try to consider what in the story seems strange, unclear, unfamiliar to you. Where can you make connections to the characters, situations, setting? Also, bring in an article which you have annotated for words, images, and activities that might seem unfamiliar to someone from another culture.
Monday, Jan. 12: Read Gordimer's "Country Lovers" on p. 331 and read through ch. 4 (pp.53-71) in "Writing Analytically."
Wednesday Jan. 14 We will meet in computer lab 3615. You should read elements of fiction to be prepared for the lab assignment.
Wed. Jan 21: Read "Nomad and Viper" by Amos Oz p. 778 (I think.) Also, read Description of 1st writing assignment and Explication of the first paper. Are you confused? Your first assignment is a personal response, that ties your response closely to your reading. There's many ways you can fulfill it, and so concentrate on whatever idea in these readings takes your interest. Have some ideas for topics when you get to class.
Monday, Jan 26 After completing whatever you started in the complab, bring in, written down, 1. the question you are attempting to answer in your essay; 2. your thesis statement; 3. a description of some of the ways you will develop this essay. You might write an introduction or a paragraph explaining your main points.
Monday, Feb. 2: We will do peer revising today, so make sure you bring in a completed draft of your paper. Read Ch. 3 in Writing Analytically to help with brilliant ideas. ALSO read "And of Clay Are We Created" by Isabel Allende.
Wednesday FeB. 4 Paper 1 is due Monday Feb. 9! Begin to revise your paper, using the help available at revising strategies and at other links on our website. Bring in any revision questions you have, for discussion. If you have a real specific question, contact me. If you're so inclined, come see me during my office hours and I'll help you.
Wed Feb. 11: NOTE: WE ARE MEETING IN THE CLASSROOM NOT THE LAB For Wednesday, have read "The Lemon" by Arnost Lustig The theme for the next paper will be reflections on what it means to be human, so consider that question as you read these stories.
Wed. Feb. 18th : Make sure you've read "A Report to an Academy" by Kafka.
Monday, Feb 23: If you can come to SRC2800 at 9:00 to see Ray Hanania, comedian (Middle East humor) please do so. Otherwise, class is cancelled. You should finish reading Amy Foster by Joseph Conrad and ch. 5 in Writing Analytically. We will meet in the lab Wed. Feb. 25. A draft of your paper is due the following Wed.
Monday March 8--: Have read (carefully!) "The Kugelmass Episode" by Woody Allen (p.37). Consider what (if anything) makes it funny, Also read the links on our website help analyzing humor and humor terms
Work on a real revision of your paper, which is due Friday--use your critiques, revising help on the website and me if you have questions.
March 10 Wednesday: Read "A Story for Children" by Svava Jakobsdottir. Analyze a passage for its use of humor.
March 15--no class: I will be in my office if you want to discuss your final paper.
March 17: Bring your final paper to the computer lab.
