COURSE OVERVIEW
This course is designed to provide the student with a working knowledge of the essential principles and concepts of management theory and practice. It is structured to develop a concise framework inter-relating the major business disciplines and a comprehensive perspective to organize additional study in management. Practical application of the manager's role in planning, organizing, staffing, directing and controlling are demonstrated and explored.

COURSE OVERVIEW
This course will cover the basic principles of management - planning, controlling, organizing, and directing. It will emphasize preparation for becoming a professional manager. A professional manager is one that can adapt his or her style to any situation and can manage anywhere along the continuum ranging from Classical management to Behavioral management.
As part of the Business Simulation group of classes, this course will consist of application of material, interaction with students from other classes, group work, communication, and collaborative learning. Application of material means that there will be virtually no lectures. You must read the textbook before coming to class. There will be a quiz (about 10 questions) for each chapter. The material in the chapter will be discussed with the professor and other class members, and applied during each class.
Interaction with students will occur almost daily. As a Management student you will manage students from other classes/departments as far as the simulated business is concerned. You will also need to consult with and work with other class/department members. The objectives here are for you to gain some experience in management, to experience business communications, and to work with class/department members having a view of the situation that is different from that of managers.
Group work will be the norm in the Business Simulation classes, just as it is in many real-life situations. Group members are not required to like one another (although it is certainly hoped that they will), they are expected to work together. This means working with students from other classes/departments. Students that are absent or not participating may receive a pro-rated grade or a zero for an assignment. Additional individual or group assignments may be made depending on this quarter's situation. Finally, collaborative learning means that at times you will have to "teach" class members.
It is estimated that the average student will need to study 5 to 10 hours per week to earn a PASSING grade.
Attendance is required and counts for 15% of each student's grade. The HR dept/students will record attendance given to them by Management. Attendance will be pro-rated for those arriving late of leaving early.
Textbook
Reading the textbook is VITAL if you are to successfully complete this course. Chapters MUST be read BEFORE class as the material in the chapters will be discussed and applied DURING class.

100% to 90% A
89.9% to 80% B
79.9% to 70% C
69.9% to 60% D
59.9% to 0% F

Attendance will be measured by the Human Resources Department and Management. Full credit for the day will be given to those who arrive and leave on time. Fifteen percent will be deducted for arriving up to 15 minutes late or for leaving early. Twenty-five percent credit will be deducted for arriving late or leaving early up to one-half hour. Half credit will be deducted for missing an hour; three-quarter credit will be deducted for missing more than one and one-half hours. No credit will be given for missing 2 hours or more.
Department managers will measure participation. Students are expected to participate in EVERY assignment. Students must cooperate with all other students. Each student is expected to complete every part of each assignment.
Cooperation will be measured by a survey of your peers. The HR department will develop the survey.
Chapter Quizzes
To ensure that you have read the chapter before beginning work on assignments for that chapter, and to ensure that you will be able to participate in the group and company activities you will be tested on each assigned chapter. These will be quizzes of approximately 10 questions each and will be completed during the first 5 minutes of class on the day assigned. The quizzes will contribute 15% to each student's grade. Students taking the quiz late, but before the end of class on the assigned quiz day will have 25% deducted. Fifty-percent will be deducted for each day a quiz is taken late {an assignment 2 days late is worth zero.}.
Assignments
Assignments include reading all assigned material, completing assignment sheets for departmental work, completing assignments on cross-functional teams, and completing any other assignments given by the CEO. Although some deadlines DURING the quarter are flexible, ALL ASSIGNMENTS MUST BE COMPLETED BY THE LAST CLASS MEETING OF THE QUARTER. If you fall behind your grade will suffer.
Assignments may need to be completed using one or more of the following methods:
ORAL REPORT - Consists of asking questions from the assigned chapter and the questions listed under the PROBLEM section of the assignment sheet. Oral reports will be
completed at the beginning of each class.
DISCUSSION - A group discussion with a faculty member. Your contribution to the discussion, and elaboration on the problem and possible solutions must show mastery of the
assigned reading material and knowledge of key concepts.
WRITTEN REPORT - Typed. Contributions from each team member, as well as the group's conclusions must be presented.
BUSINESS REPORT - A formal report. Typed and double-spaced. The following format MUST be used.

GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS - As specified in the chapter assignment and found in the graphic organizer handout.
SOFTWARE OUTPUT - The results of using one of the software programs.
COMMUNICATIONS REPORTS - Written list of other departments and people consulted.
SPECIAL - A specific result like a performance evaluation or price list.
AN ASSIGNMENT SUBMISSION FORM (OBTAINED FROM THE CEO) MUST ACCOMPANY ALL ASSIGNMENTS.
UNLESS TOLD OTHERWISE BY THE CEO, ALL ASSIGNMENTS MUST BE TYPED OR OTHERWISE COMPLETED ON A COMPUTER.
BACK-UP all work on your department's floppy - don't save to the C drive. If you work at home you must use a format that the simulation has or that is readable by the simulation software. Saving in ASCII and converting is acceptable as long as you perform any needed editing.
ALL WORK, FINISHED OR IN-PROGRESS, IS TO REMAIN IN THE SIMULATION ROOM. Even if you have never missed a day of school since kindergarten, the one day you take something home, something will happen.
Assignments may be submitted on computer disk.
Assignments will be graded as soon as practical. Assignments may be revised and resubmitted for grading up to 3 class periods after being returned (except for the two outside
sales calls the sales students must make) if the "Resubmit" box on the Assignment Submission Form has been checked by the instructor. The original work must be submitted with the revised work. Students MUST keep a portfolio of all work, as many portions of each department's work will be needed for end of the quarter business plan.
Upper Management (faculty) reserves the right to make special assignments as needed.
Incomplete grades (I) will not generally be given except in extreme cases of medical emergency or other catastrophe. Incomplete grades are given at the professor's discretion.
Students wanting the S/F grading option must turn in the completed form to the instructor by the beginning of the 4th week of class.
RULES
Permission to withdraw will NOT be given during the last 2 weeks of the quarter.
Any students caught cheating will, at the professor's discretion, receive an "F" for the exam or for the assignment.
Student rights and responsibilities are outlined in the College of DuPage Catalog. It is each student's obligation to know and understand them.
