How Do Online Courses Compare to Classroom-Based Courses?

C.O.D. Online courses are equivalent in content to their on-campus counterparts. They follow the same curriculum guidelines and course objectives. Most online faculty also teach in the classroom. Students receive the same high-quality instruction as they would in an on-campus classroom. When online courses are completed successfully, they are recorded on the student's record in the same manner.

Online learning provides easy access to instruction. No matter where students are located, they "attend" class at times that best fit their schedules. They interact with the instructor and fellow students via various online communication tools including discussion board, chat room, and/or e-mail. Assignments and tests are also completed online.

The online learning environment differs from the classroom setting. Online classes are unlike traditional classroom classes in terms of how the material is presented, the interaction among class members, and the overall learning experience. Successful online learners are self-motivated and self-disciplined; they have basic computer skills and feel comfortable communicating in writing. Many students report that they learn more in online classes than in face-to-face classes and find the experience more rewarding.

Online classes aren't for everyone. Even if you are an excellent student, you may find that online classes are not compatible with your learning style. Before enrolling in your first online class, think about whether online learning is right for you by checking out your learning readiness and technical readiness for online learning.
