College of DuPage Board of Trustees Voice Confidence in Presidential Succession Plan
Laying the groundwork for a seamless transition following the upcoming departure of President Dr. Ann Rondeau, College of DuPage Trustees voiced confidence at their Oct. 18 meeting in the anticipated appointment of current Vice President of Administration and Treasurer (CFO) Dr. Brian W. Caputo as interim president.
The Board of Trustees is expected to vote on the succession plan during open session at its regularly scheduled Nov. 15 meeting. Under the proposed plan, Dr. Caputo will assume leadership of the College after Dr. Rondeau steps down Dec. 31 to take a presidential post at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif.
Board Chairman Deanne Mazzochi, who offered her support for the transition plan, emphasized the need to continue the stability, transparency and fiscal responsibility of Dr. Rondeau’s tenure.
“College of DuPage has undergone a renaissance of sorts in the last several years due, in large part, to strong, sound leadership,” she said. “We, as a College, are in an excellent position not only financially but academically with our full accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission. Dr. Caputo has the ability to build on that momentum with a clear focus on student success.”
Dr. Caputo, who joined the College in March 2017, holds a Bachelor of Science from the renowned West Point, a Master of Science in Accountancy from DePaul University, and a Master of Public Administration from Northern Illinois University. He also earned a Ph.D. from Northern Illinois University with public administration, public policy and government finance as fields of study. Moreover, he has a range of higher-educational experience as a full-time faculty member at Central Michigan University, an adjunct faculty member at Northern Illinois University, and guest lecturer in numerous professional capacities. Dr. Caputo is integrally involved in two major academic initiatives at the College: Guided Pathways and Project Hire-Ed. He also worked as a member of the executive team that helped establish Innovation DuPage, a cooperative venture that promotes business growth and job creation connecting small businesses with the necessary resources to thrive, while providing new owners with the tools to succeed. Innovation DuPage was formed collaboratively with multiple governmental, economic development, and academic organizations.
He is a Certified Public Accountant as well as a Certified Public Finance Officer and in 2015, Dr. Caputo became a Board Member of the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB). The GASB is a seven-member board that establishes accounting and financial reporting standards for units of state and local government in the United States, including public institutions of higher education.
Bringing more than 35 years of leadership and executive experience to the role of interim president, Dr. Caputo previously served as Chief Financial Officer/City Treasurer of the City of Aurora for nearly 19 years prior to his role at College of DuPage. In 2004, Caputo retired from the United States Army Reserve as a lieutenant colonel after more than 22 years of active and reserve military service, during which he specialized in financial and human resources management.
