New Philharmonic music director and conductor Kirk Muspratt has been named recipient of the Illinois Council of Orchestras’ 2018 ICO Award for Conductor of the Year (Professional Orchestra in recognition of his exemplary achievements.

The award is adjudicated by a panel of judges drawn from the Illinois Council of Orchestras Board of Directors and independent professional conductors and musicians.

Muspratt’s engaging concerts have enjoyed steady attendance increases throughout his tenure. Audiences have come to know him for his warm, genuine personality and his desire to inspire their lives through music at his concerts, and he is commonly recognized as a director and conductor capable of building strong and productive working relationships with the musicians.

“I am greatly honored to receive this award,” Muspratt said. “I see this as an endorsement of New Philharmonic’s ongoing efforts to create programming that challenges both the orchestra and our audience and my personal goal to take advantage of the wealth of established and rising new talent in the greater Chicago area while reinforcing an understanding and appreciation of the joys inherent in orchestral music.”

New Philharmonic, the only professional orchestra based in DuPage County, has inspired classical music enthusiasts for more than 40 years. It continues to thrive with the goal to give innovative treatment to both classic compositions and modern works while striving to make the music accessible to new audiences and youth through a variety of educational efforts. The orchestra was honored with the Illinois Council of Orchestras’ 2017 ICO Award for Professional Orchestra of the Year. Today, under Muspratt’s direction, New Philharmonic consists of more than 60 professional musicians and performs more than a dozen concerts a year, reaching more than 7,500 from the greater Chicago area annually.

The Illinois Council of Orchestras (ICO) was founded in 1974 with the mission to encourage, promote and assist orchestras throughout the State of Illinois; promote an exchange of information among members including providing consultants and speakers; and hold educational conferences for member organizations including musicians, staff, boards, volunteers and audiences.
