COD Women’s Tennis Team Looks to Rebuild, Qualify for Nationals
By Jennifer Duda
Although the Lady Chaparral netters have struggled early in the season, Coach Jim Bowers is confident his team of young players will grow more comfortable in their individual games and build momentum as the mid-October regional competition nears.
Rebecca LeFever returns as the senior-most member of the seven-player squad. The sophomore from South Elgin High School will play high in the lineup and has shown hard work and persistent determination during her matches, Bowers said.
“We’re looking forward to her showing the freshman players her leadership skills,” he said. “Our freshman players are experienced in their own right, coming from several highly prestigious high schools, including Benet Academy, Glenbard East, Addison Trail, Aurora East and Schaumburg.”
Despite the early season losses, Bowers said the team played strong, losing by narrow margins.
“As everyone continues to gain more experience during matches, they’ll become more comfortable during big points,” he said. “We will give ourselves an opportunity to see the big breaks go our way more often.”
The Lady Chaparrals are home the next three matches, hosting Oakton (Sept. 19), Waubonsee Valley (Sept. 21), and Lake County (Sept. 26). The team finishes the regular season at Moraine Valley (Oct. 4) before returning home to host the regional tournament Oct. 13 and 14.
