Continuing Education Introduces Free Special Interest Groups This Fall
By Mike McKissack
Continuing Education’s Lifelong Learning program at College of DuPage is introducing Special Interest Groups (SIGs) this fall that will foster student learning opportunities outside of the traditional classroom environment.
The free SIGs are formed by a collective of people with a common interest in a specific subject. Providing an environment for members to participate as active learners, SIGs are independent and self-directed, with participants deciding how the group will function.
“The SIGs are led by student volunteers and provide a great opportunity for students to share their knowledge and passion for a topic while simultaneously learning from other students who are doing the same,” said Continuing Education Program Coordinator Julie Konczyk. “Through our Lifelong Learning program, we are always seeking new ways to serve the growing population of older adults in our district.”
This fall’s SIG offerings include the following:
- The Forum: Dialogue to Challenge Our Thinking: This SIG is designed to challenge thinking and broaden perspectives through open dialogue and active investigation into current issues ranging from the changing demographics of retirees to nuclear disarmament and climate change. This group will meet on the first Monday of each month from 1 to 3 p.m. beginning on Monday, Oct. 2.
- The Joys and Challenges of Grandparents and Grand Friendships: Led by author and intergenerational expert Helene Block Fields, this SIG is dedicated
to intergenerational learning in all forms. Participants will share their own experiences
and explore ways to share knowledge and talents through mentorship. This group will
meet from 10 a.m. to noon on the first and third Fridays of each month beginning on
Friday, Oct. 6.
