COD College Theater Presents ‘Captain Blood’ Nov. 9 to 19
By Jennifer Duda
College of DuPage College Theater presents Vidas Barzdukas’ adaptation of Rafael Sabatini’s 1922 novel, “Captain Blood,” Thursday, Nov. 9, to Sunday, Nov. 19, in the Playhouse Theatre of the McAninch Arts Center, 425 Fawell Blvd. in Glen Ellyn.
Wrongly convicted as a traitor, Dr. Peter Blood is banished to live in slavery on a Caribbean Island. While serving his time, he falls in love with Arabella, the lady of the plantation. When Dr. Blood escapes and takes up the life of a pirate, can fate bring him back to his love amid a world filled with sword fights, deceit and adventure?
“Though the novel is fiction, it’s based on historical events, such as the Monmouth Rebellion and Henry Bittman, a doctor who cared for soldiers in the Battle of Sedgemoor,” said Director Connie Canaday Howard. “Bittman was subsequently arrested, charged and convicted of treason. He was sentenced to death, but that sentence was commuted to slavery in the Caribbean.”
This adaptation has two central appeals, she said. First, Blood is an honorable man wronged and misunderstood, even by the woman he loves. Secondly, it’s about soulmates finding one another.
“It’s a sweeping, epic tale,” Canaday Howard said. “In addition, it’s really about the need to stand up for what’s right, even if you feel you’re the lone voice. Fighting injustice, and for those without a voice, is central to this piece.”
Tickets are $14 for students and seniors and $16 for adults. A pre-show discussion with Canaday Howard and the designers is set for 6:45 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9. A post-show discussion with Canaday Howard, the cast and crew is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 17.
