COD Offers New Professional Writing Certificate Program
By Mike McKissack
College of DuPage will offer a new Professional Writing Certificate program beginning this fall.
According to Dr. Steve Accardi, Assistant Professor of English at COD, the new program provides students with the opportunity to communicate effectively in a variety of professional settings across a wide range of fields, including business, government, health care, industry, nonprofit and technology.
“This program has the dual purpose of serving students who are interested in professional writing but have no previous experience with it, as well as experienced professionals who are looking to sharpen their rhetoric and writing skills,” said Accardi. “The design of the courses provides points of entry into the professional world and pathways to build a portfolio for career advancement.”
The Professional Writing Certificate is an 18 credit-hour program with courses in digital writing, professional editing, technical writing, workplace writing, writing in the community and writing in the professions.
Accardi said the program was particularly timely.
“Professional writers are needed everywhere, in nearly every business and industry. Their job is to make the complex clear,” he said. “In addition, it’s one of the fastest-growing jobs in the U.S. and particularly in DuPage County.”
