COD Student Selected to Compete in Sampaguita Scholarship Competition

College of DuPage graphic design student Alpha Sadcopen has been selected to compete in the Sampaguita Scholarship Competition.

Sadcopen is one of five finalists who will compete for the first-place $2,000 scholarship through a written essay judged by three writers and journalists and an oral essay presentation judged by community leaders at the 23rd Annual Sampaguita Ball on Saturday, July 30. The only competitor selected from a community college, Sadcopen was nominated by BIBBAK Illinois, an organization dedicated to Igorot solidarity and the preservation of Filipino-Igorot culture.

Born in the Philippines, Sadcopen moved to the U.S. at age eight. She participates in a variety of groups celebrating Filipino culture including the Philippine-American Cultural Foundation and Piyesta Pinoy, and recently participated as a volunteer on the Field Museum’s Philippine Digital Co-Curation team.

The Sampaguita Groupis a nonprofit organization whose mission is to reverse the trend known as “Filipino-American Educational Downward Mobility” through educating the public, encouraging Filipino-American organizations to launch their own college scholarship funding programs and awarding partial scholarships to Filipino American women matriculated in U.S. schools.
