A team of College of DuPage students is currently in first place for the Midwest Region after the first round of the Student Math League (SML) competition.

Hosted by the American Mathematical Association for Two Year Colleges (AMATYC), the SML competition is a national mathematics contest open to two-year college students who have completed a minimum of 12 semester hours of community college coursework. The competition features two rounds of exams, one administered in fall and one in spring. Click here for more information.

After the first round, College of DuPage leads 25 schools in the Midwest Region team competition with a score of 100.5. COD also ranks 16th nationally against more than 100 schools.

Team scores are comprised of a school’s top five individual finishers. At COD they are Peter Gutfeldt (Warrenville), first place; Mitchell Allen (Westmont), second place; Isaac Jordan (Winfield) and Steven Michelotti (St. Charles), tied for third place; and Kevin Uvodich (Winfield), fourth place. In the Midwest Region, Gutfeldt is in second place while Allen, Jordan and Michelotti are in the top 10.

Chris Bailey, Associate Professor of Mathematics, said students who were enrolled in Calculus I or higher at COD were invited to participate in the contest. On Oct. 21, 65 students took the 20-question test.

“The students enjoy doing it,” he said. “It’s challenging but rewarding, as these students are applying their strong math skills outside of a classroom context. It will be exciting to see what happens when the second round takes place in February.”

The College of DuPage team has finished in the top five for the Midwest Region for 15 consecutive years, finishing first in 2006, 2007, 2010 and 2014.

Founded in 1971, the AMATYC is dedicated to the promotion of the role of two-year colleges in mathematics education in the United States and Canada. In addition to the SML competition, the AMATYC hosts an annual conference, summer institutes, workshops and mentoring for teachers and publishes the journal MathAMATYC Educator.
