College of DuPage President Dr. Robert L. Breuder has been named among this year’s Distinguished Alumni by Florida State University.

Recognized for his contributions to community colleges, Dr. Breuder and his fellow award winners were honored at a ceremony held earlier this month at the Florida State University Alumni Center in Tallahassee.

“I am truly humbled by this recognition and grateful for the guidance I received while a doctoral student at FSU,” Dr. Breuder said. “The faculty there and my experience at the university made a tremendous impact on my life and, subsequently, my career.”

At age 36, Dr. Breuder became the youngest community college president in the nation in 1981, taking a position at Williamsport Area Community College in Pennsylvania. He later conceived of and facilitated the merger of that institution with Pennsylvania State University in 1989 to create the Pennsylvania College of Technology. He went on to serve as president of William Rainey Harper College from 1998 to 2008 before becoming president at College of DuPage in 2009.

During his tenure as a college president, Dr. Breuder has secured passage of three capital referenda totaling $415 million and introduced 149 degree and certificate programs, including 22 baccalaureate degrees. At College of DuPage, he introduced 13 on campus 3+1 baccalaureate degrees involving five partner universities, and has overseen more than $550 million in campus improvements involving more than one million square feet. He has grown a substantial fund balance at College of DuPage ($118 million) in order to absorb or seize upon unexpected challenges and opportunities, and he has been instrumental in the affirmation of the Aaa and AAA bond ratings from Moody’s Investors Service and Standard and Poor’s, respectively, the highest bond rating possible.

Dr. Breuder is recipient of the 2013 National Pacesetter of the Year Award from the National Council for Marketing & Public Relations and the 2013 Central Region CEO Award from the Association of Community College Trustees. Additionally, he is a member of the U.S. Bank Advisory Board.
