Diana Martinez Named MAC Interim Director
By Jennifer Duda
Diana Martinez brings with her a wealth of experience, including stints at Second City, the Paramount Theatre and Pheasant Run, to her new role as interim director of the McAninch Arts Center at College of DuPage.
She replaces Stephen Cummins, who left the MAC in July to take a position at California State University.
Martinez, who started in late September, said her arrival comes at an exciting time for the MAC and the College. The performing arts facility is nearing the end of a $35 million renovation project, which includes creation of the Cleve Carney Art Gallery and revamping of the MAC’s three performance spaces.
“Right now, my goal is to bring stability in this time of transition and build our audience,” she said. “There are many opportunities to pursue, and we want to do more for the students and the community members.”
From 2001 to 2009, Martinez served as executive director of the Paramount Theatre/Aurora Civic Centre. Most recently, she served as president of Second City from 2009 until October 2012.
Martinez, a Glen Ellyn resident, said she’s excited to work in what essentially is her back yard and looks forward to making connections in her own community.
The McAninch Arts Center will offer an abridged season, following the reopening of the facility in late December. The season begins with New Philharmonic’s “New Year’s Eve! Viennese Pops with an International Twist” on Tuesday, Dec. 31. The MAC’s official grand opening celebration features Jim Belushi and the Chicago Board of Comedy on Saturday, March 8. Details are being finalized and will be announced soon, Martinez said.
“This is exciting for me because the MAC is poised for the future with a new look,” she said. “People need to see what we have to offer and we’ll be looking at programming that will maximize this beautiful facility.”
