Family Photos From the Middle East
Two sisters and a brother, Jaffa / Tel Aviv,
circa 1917
The children in the photo on the left side includes my father and his
two sisters. On the right, the same sibling are shown as young adults.
My father's family moved from the old city of Jerusalem to Tel Aviv
in 1912.
The photo of the children was taken around the time when the entire
Jewish population of Jaffa and Tel Aviv (including my grandparents,
and their young children) were expelled from their homes in April 1917
by the rulers of the Ottoman empire. The Ottoman Empire ruled over the
Middle East from about 1517 until about the end of 1917.
The expelled people were able to return to their homes in November 1917
when the British received the Mandate over parts of the Middle east
including the Land of Israel.
