Family Photos From the Middle East

Book cover, Jerusalem, 1898

My great grandfather who lived, studied and worked in a Yeshiva in Jerusalem wrote a commentary book as part of his studies. The book was published in Jerusalem in 1898 and purchased at the time by the Library of the Congress in Washington D.C..

Studying was always considered a great virtue and first priority in the Jewish culture. It became an institution since the time of the Hellenic conquest of the land of Israel in order to preserve the faith and the hope of reestablishing the nation. Jewish studies included teaching the way of life based on the writing of the Torah, (the five books of Moses) including many specific laws and guidance that are applicable specifically to life in the Land of Israel.
