Information Literacy and Research Skills for Faculty

Information literacy comprises the abilities to find, evaluate, use and communicate information. In the 21st century, these complex abilities are more important than ever for today's students as they enter the world of work. Take this course to find out how you can facilitate the teaching and learning of information skills and concepts for your students. You'll also get a chance to update your own research skills by using online catalogs, article databases, and Internet search engines.

Your WHAT Hurts?!--Finding Quality Health Information
Facilitator: Debra Kakuk
Come to this workshop and learn how to find quality health-related materials to answer your medical needs! Via PowerPoint presentation, live demonstrations and hands-on computer work, explore the variety of consumer health materials available within the C.O.D. Library and on the Internet. This interactive session will help you: formulate search strategies; locate and evaluate health information; familiarize you with print and electronic health resources; and learn how a skilled health information professional can assist you! Enhancing Science Instruction with Multimedia
This workshop provides Natural and Applied Sciences and Health Sciences with a hands-on, practical demonstration of how multimedia resources can spice up your science classes. Acquaint yourselves with the models, software, videos, images and slides available in the C.O.D. Library as well as on the Internet. Lean how to locate, obtain and manipulate various media types into powerful classroom lectures. Leave this workshop with useful tips, locator tools, hands-on experience and the creative suggestions of your division Librarians and peers!
Power Library Research Assignments (with Pastry!)
Facilitators: Christine Kickels & Diana Fitzwater
Good pastry calls for key ingredients--so too for effective library research assignments for students. A critical thinking component, written learning outcomes, and regular assessment are just a few of the necessary ingredients. Come to this workshop hungry for pastry and new ideas.
Power Internet Searching for Faculty (with Pastry!)
The Internet has established itself as an indispensable research tool and information source. Learn how to navigate the Internet efficiently and to harness the power of search engines, directories, and the "Invisible Web" to make your Internet searches yield high-quality results while taking less of your time.

"They'll Never Notice": Plagiarism, Cheating and Copyright in the Classroom
How many copied words in a paper constitute plagiarism? What are the trends in cheating techniques? When do you have to request permission to copy something or use it in the classroom? If you are concerned with how we can promote ethical use of information in the classroom please join us. Through a variety of methods, we will bring you up to date on these issues and give you an opportunity to dialog.

Copyright Basics
Learn the basics of copyright law and how it impacts classroom teaching. Discover what the principle of fair use allows and how fair use is determined. (3 workshop hours)
