Persistent Linking to Online Materials

Persistent or "durable" links allow the faculty member to create online reading lists for their students by reliably linking to articles and other materials in the Library's subscription databases.

Here's how it works:

The Library uses a proxy server system to make sure that only our students and other Library patrons with valid Library cards use our subscription resources. In order to "send" the user through this proxy system, the URL to the article has to be formatted in a special way. (Luckily, the majority of the databases do this for us.)

Caveat: The article vendors sometimes change their holdings. Be SURE to test your links at the beginning of every semester!

Here's what the persistent URL to this article looks like:

http://0-search.epnet.com.lrc.cod.edu/login.aspx?direct=true&db=afh&an=16029136

The "0-" at the very beginning of the address and the "lrc.cod.edu" at the end of the first part of the address sends the user through the library's proxy server so the database company knows that they are an allowed user.

How to add readings using persistent URL's to your webpages:

Again, most of the database companies add this information to the persistent URL for us. If the database you are using allows persistent URL's (see chart below) and if for some reason the link does not include the proxy server information in the given URL, use this conversion tool . Alternately, you can send your URL to the Online Librarian and she will do it for you!

How to Get Readings with Persistent URL's

Most of the Library's databases and other online resources allow article-level linking. Please use the chart below as a reference when using persistent links. If you need help or have questions, please contact Denise Cote at:cotede@cod.edu or 630-942-2092.
