The Library at College of DuPage has created a two-year residency program in community college librarianship that will attract the best and the brightest of recently graduated master of library studies professionals. The residency offers the successful candidate an attractive opportunity to explore an exciting area of librarianship.
"The residency has opened my eyes to the crucial position the community college library occupies within the ecology of higher education, and in the greater community as a whole. It is rare when a new librarian, such as myself, can apply knowledge learned in graduate school in such a dynamic, multifaceted environment as College of DuPage."
-- Ameet Doshi,
2004-2006 Resident Librarian
The College of DuPage, a dynamic community college with an annual enrollment of 30,000 students, is embarking on its sixth residency program in community college librarianship which was instituted in 1998. In an effort to attract the best-qualified people to the profession of community college librarianship, we offer a two-year residency program which exposes recent graduates from an American Library Association-accredited master's degree program in Library or Information Science to a wide variety of library functions in a state-of-the-art facility. The successful candidate will begin the residency in August 2008.
During the two-year program the resident will work in selected public and technical services areas with mentors and participate in professional development. The resident will design and carry out a significant research, instructional or service based project during the second year. There are also opportunities to participate in national teleconferencing projects and teach in a Library Technical Assistant program. Assignments may include day, evening and week-end hours.
The College of DuPage Library is a full-service, cutting-edge facility that serves approximately 3,000 students, faculty, staff, and community members each day. More than 120 public workstations and circulating laptop computers provide access to all of our resources including the Internet, the OPAC, software applications, online databases, and online library instruction. The Library has six classrooms and our second level has recently been fitted with a wireless network. Our very active library/information literacy program reaches 20,000 students through more than 1,100 sessions each year. The Library was the recipient of the ACRL/Blackwell Excellence in Academic Libraries award in the community colleges category in 2000, the first year this prestigious award was offered.
