Finding books in the C.O.D. Library
Use the Library Catalog to locate books in the Library's collection. You can do a "subject" or a "keyword" search.
Tip: A subject search locks you into just the subject headings; a keyword search looks for your words everywhere in the catalog. Do a keyword to expand your possibilities, but always try a subject search first.
- Search for building name (Ex.: Subject Larkin Building | Keyword Chapel of St. Ignatius)
- Search for an Architect (Ex.Subject Boullee | Keyword Labrouste )
- Search for the type of building (Ex. Subject Architecture Domestic | Keyword Temples )
- Search for the type of Architecture (Ex. Subject Organic Architecture | Keyword Industrial and Architecture )
- Search for the city or country in which the building is located (Ex. Subject Architecture Florida | Keyword Houses and Florida )
- Search for the time period (Ex. Subject Architecture Ancient | Keyword 19th Century and Architecture )
- Search for specific movements in Architecture: (Ex. Subject Architecture Postmodern | Keyword Gothic Architecture )
- Search for specific topics related to Architecture: (Ex. Subject Building Laws | Keyword BOCA )
Using the C.O.D. Reference Collection and "Survey" books
Its also important to look at materials that are in the reference collection and in books that are about architecture in general (survey books). Here are some excellent examples of these kinds of books.
- The Phaidon World Atlas of Contemporary Architecture REF NA680 .P53 2004
- Key Buildings of the Twentieth Century : Plans, Sections, and Elevations REF NA2705 .W44 2004
- Sir Banister Fletcher 's A History of Architecture GEN NA200 .F63 1996
- The Great Buildings Collection REF NA202 .M38 2000
- Key Monuments of the History of Architecture GEN NA 202 .M5
- World Architecture 1900-2000 : A Critical Mosaic REF NA680 .W67 1999 v.1-v.10

Using Books in Other Libraries
You can also use books at other libraries to supplement your research. The library has borrowing agreements with other local colleges and you can use a special database called World Cat to find books and other materials from all over the country. You may also click on the "Search other LinkIn Libraries" from the catalog page to find and order your book from one of our partner libraries.
Refer to the "Request" tab above to learn more about using World Cat and ordering books from other libraries.
Don't forget that you are allowed to go in person to other libraries, like IIT and UIC, to use their materials in the Library. You wouldn't be allowed to check out materials but could make copies of book pages and articles.
