Small Business Management Project

Background

This course project is a research assignment in small business. Before you begin your research, you may want to review materials in the Small Business chapter of your text.

The Project

Small business owners are constantly evaluating their internal and external environments. Internally, they must be aware of various management and financial issues. They must be ready to respond to new challenges and opportunities. In their external environment, entrepreneurs must stay on top of changes and opportunities in their industry, competition, financing, marketing and many other areas.

In your project, you will research the same factors in the small business environment. Use the following outline as a guide in this process.

Your Business

Consider a unique business opportunity.
Why is this business special? What makes it different?
Use 1-2 paragraphs to explain.

Industry Analysis

What industries does your business represent?
What is happening in these industries?

Marketing

Describe the target market for your business.
Provide a detailed description for your target market of age, gender, ethnicity, geographic region and any other pertinent information. Be sure to include statistical data.

Financing

Where will you obtain the capital necessary to start your business.
Describe some of the methods of financing through the Small Business Administration
Find and describe one additional source of financing..

Issues

In one of the Library business databases, find one current article that discusses small business issues. Summarize the article in 1-2 paragraphs.

Project Format

Neatly assemble all your work.
All material should be typewritten. Include graphs and charts for ease in reading.
A list of resources ("Works Cited Page" in MLA format) should be included. For correct format, refer to Research Help>Citing Sources on the College of DuPage Library web site.
