COURSE DESCRIPTION:
A forum for discussing issues related to working as a library technical assistant with emphasis on practical applications in the student's Field Experience. An opportunity to apply concepts learned and experience gained to formulate a resume.
OBJECTIVES:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:
- Demonstrate competency in successful job applications skills.
- Display an effective resume and cover letter, which incorporate the Field Experience.
- Display a professional portfolio that provides a visual representation of the field experience as well as one that can be used in the job application process.
- Participate in discussions regarding the unique experience of employment in the field of library and information science.
- Demonstrate proficiency in the use of electronic and print resources to search for job and information in the library field.
- Explain the importance of good communication skills in the library workplace.
- Explain the significance of Americans with Disabilities Act and how it applies to library work.
- Demonstrate useful methods of assisting a communicating with people with disabilities in the library.
Course Requirements:
Students will complete the following:
- Attendance and participation in the five Field Experience Seminars
- In-class assignments and discussions
- Creation of a professional portfolio
- Creation of resume and cover letter
- Presentation of the portfolio and field experiences
GRADE RUBRIC:
Final grades will be determined as follows:
Students will complete all of the following to receive an A grade:
- Attend all five seminars
- Complete the 99 hour Field Experience
- Create the professional portfolio according to guidelines provided
- Submit all assignments on or before the due date
- Complete all assignments according to the specified guidelines
- Complete all in class assignments
- Complete all in class assignments with an acceptable level of understanding of the material
- Participate in a presentation about your Field Experience
Students must complete all of the following guidelines to receive the final grade B.
- Attend four of the five seminars
- Complete the 99-hour Field Experience.
- Submit all assignments on or before the due date
- Complete all assignments according to the specified guidelines
- Complete all in class assignments
- Complete all in class assignments with an acceptable level of understanding of the material
- Participate in a presentation about your Field Experience
Final grade C
- Students who attend three of the five seminars and/or have other deficiencies related to their assignments will receive a C.
Final grade D or below
- Students who attend less than 3 seminars and/or do not submit other assignments.
