Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course, the students should be able to:

  1. Explain how to work effectively with all types of library patrons.
  2. Explain the importance of the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights and Freedom to Read Statement as a defense against censorship of library materials and services.
  3. Explain how to assist with services to promote the library’s image, programs and mission.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of the different types of services to children and young adults, such as story hours and summer reading programs.

Attendance: Attendance is expected for all class sessions and will be recorded for each class session. Attendance at each class is worth 10 points.

Grading:

Total points possible: 470           420- 470 A
Attendance: 80 370- 419 B
Assignments: 330 325- 369 C
In class papers: 20 280- 324 D
Final exam: 40 0- 279 F

Unexcused late assignments will be lowered by 10% of total possible points, and will not be accepted later than one week, at the discretion of the instructors.

Plagiarism Policy:

All work submitted must be completed by the student who is registered for the course. Students found guilty of plagiarism will fail the course. Submitting the work of others, without explicit acknowledgment of their authorship, whether published or not, constitutes plagiarism. Students found guilty of plagiarism are given an "F" for the course and in certain cases are excluded from taking other courses at the College.

Withdrawal Policy:

"Students are encouraged to consult directly with the professor when considering a course withdrawal. The student may withdraw from a course by contacting the Registration Office up to the eighth calendar day following the mid-term date in any quarter. Thereafter, a grade will be assigned which reflects the student’s actual performance in the class." (p. 58, College of DuPage Catalog, 1997).
