Description from College of DuPage Catalog:
Technical Services area of a library, including
cataloging and processing materials, card preparation, and the tools necessary
to perform these functions. Emphasis on automation related to the Technical
Services area.
General Course Objectives:
To familiarize students with the functions and tasks of
the Technical Services Department of the library and the role of the Library
Technical Assistant in this department.
To familiarize students with the vocabulary and physical
features of books.
To provide students with a basic understanding of
descriptive cataloging according to AACR2 rules and some experience in
preparing descriptive cataloging for selected books.
To provide students with a basic understanding of the
structure of subject heading lists and some experience in assigning subject
headings to selected book categories such as fiction, biography, and simple
nonfiction. The use of both Sears List of Subject Headings and Library of
Congress Subject Headings will be introduced.
To provide students with an introduction to the
principles of classification using the Dewey Decimal Classification system and
basic experience in assigning classification number to selected book
categories such as fiction, biography, and simple nonfiction. The format of
the Library of Congress system will be touched upon.
To familiarize students with catalog card format
according to AACR2 rules and to acquaint students with sources of printed
catalog cards. An optional assignment gives basic experience in typing catalog
cards according to the format described.
To familiarize students with ALA filing rules.
To familiarize students with the various tasks involved
in the physical preparation of book and nonbook materials.
To familiarize students with the files related to
library materials and provide basic experience maintaining the shelflist
catalog (adding and deleting copies) and maintaining authority files.
To familiarize students with the vocabulary of library
automation and inform them of the various bibliographic utilities and the
different types of services they provide.
To provide students with hands-on experience in using
MARC format for books by retrieving and revising book records from the OCLC
system.
Performance Objectives:
The Student should be able to:
Prepare descriptive cataloging for selected print
materials using AACR2 rules.
Assign subject headings and Dewey Decimal classification
numbers to selected print materials such as fiction, biography and simple
non-fiction.
Perform copy cataloging by transcribing data from
printed sources, such as American book Publishing Record (BPR) and Cataloging
in Publication (CIP).
Add and delete copies in a manually filed card catalog
and shelflist catalog.
Be familiar with the format for typed unit cards and
secondary cards.
File cards in the shelflist and public catalog according
to 1980 ALA rules.
Identify the steps required to process print and
non-print materials for circulation and report on one library's book
processing workflow from the time a book is received in Technical Services to
the time it is shelf-ready.
Identify conditions when it is necessary to refer a
problem to a librarian or supervisor.
