| Course Description: |
Examines the role of the Library Technical Assistant in the
practice of acquiring print and non-print materials from the selection
decision through processing. Budgeting, binding, processing and weeding
will also be covered. Both manual and automated systems are incorporated
into course materials. |
| General Course Objectives: |

To prepare students to identify and to work effectively with
various aspects of library acquisitions procedures for books,
serials and audiovisual materials: verifying titles, preparing
orders, setting up order files and checking in materials. |

To acquaint students with the components of a materials selection
policy and the importance of having a policy to guide selection. |

To introduce major selection tools. |
| * |
To acquaint students with verification tools. |
| * |
To present the main features of both manual and automated
acquisitions systems. |

To introduce special aspects of the acquisitions process: weeding
of the collection, bindery operations, gifts and exchange and supply
ordering. |

To explain basic accounting procedures for the acquisitions
department. |
