Course Description: Examines the role of the Library Technical Assistant in the practice of acquiring print and non-print materials from the selection decision through processing. Budgeting, binding, processing and weeding will also be covered. Both manual and automated systems are incorporated into course materials.
General Course Objectives:
* To prepare students to identify and to work effectively with various aspects of library acquisitions procedures for books, serials and audiovisual materials: verifying titles, preparing orders, setting up order files and checking in materials.
* To acquaint students with the components of a materials selection policy and the importance of having a policy to guide selection.
* To introduce major selection tools.
* To acquaint students with verification tools.
* To present the main features of both manual and automated acquisitions systems.
* To introduce special aspects of the acquisitions process: weeding of the collection, bindery operations, gifts and exchange and supply ordering.
* To explain basic accounting procedures for the acquisitions department.
FYIs:
* This syllabus is intended as a guide to the class. Changes will be communicated to students orally.
* Students will need an email account.
* Students will need to be familiar with accessing COD's library catalog and electronic resources.
* Late assignments will only be accepted for one week after due date. Late assignments will automatically have a 5-point deduction.
Grading: Class participation and attendance (50 points)
Study Guide assignments (50 points)-Random 5 of the 10 assignments will be turned in

Weeding Project (50 points)
Supply Ordering Project (50 points)
Final (Cumulative) Exam (100 points)
Grading Scale: A: 450-500 points
B: 400-449 points
C: 350-399 points
D: 300-349 points
F: 0-299 points
