Article Databases & Journals

Look for journal articles on your topic in C.O.D.'s article databases (online indexes that also contain some full text articles). You must have a valid College of DuPage library card to access the electronic indexes and databases from off-campus.

C.O.D.'s Health Databases

Westlaw Campus Research - Available on campus and also off-campus with a C.O.D. library card.
Campus Research is an easy-to-use online research service that provides college and university students with access to a comprehensive collection of news and business information and law-related resources. Access federal and state caselaw, full text of the United States Code Annotated (USCA) and Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) and more than 800 law reviews and journals, including Harvard Law Review and Yale Law Journal.

Access the Micromedex Health Care Series database for extensive drug and pharmacology information. You must obtain a username and password to use this resource from your home computer. Contact your instructor or call the Reference Desk at (630) 942-3364.

Tips to finding Health Information Technology Journals

One way to locate Health Information Technology Journals is to select the Databases link on the Library home page and click the Journal Locator tab. Select the health sciences option from the drop down menu under the Browse journal titles by subject: section and then scroll down and select from the following suggested categories [Note: the category that you select will ultimately depend on the type of information that you need to retrieve, these are only suggestions!]:

Medicine:
     Medical & Biomedical Informatics
     Medical Ethics & Philosophy
     Medical Professional Practice
     Medical Technology

Public Health
     Hospitals & Medical Centers
     Regulation of Health Care
     Social Medicine


Once you find a subject area of interest (like those listed above), look at what article databases contain the most journals pertaining to your topic and begin your search in those databases.

Reference Books

Reference materials are well indexed, organized, concise, and highly credible. They provide overviews, definitions, specific information or addresses. Types of reference books include: directories, dictionaries and encyclopedias, basic health books (describing diseases and conditions), and drug resources. Since you cannot normally take these materials home, remember that you will have to photocopy, or write down the information that you need.

Citing Sources with the APA Style Guidelines

Health Science Courses often require APA citation style but you may be asked to use MLA style (clarify with your instructors what style is required for each research project).
