When looking for information about manufacturing topics on the web, it is important to separate truly instructive pages from those that are produced by manufacturers who are simply describing their products. Note that manufacturers' pages are great for learning about applications. The tools below will help you begin your search.

Suggested Sites:

The following websites offer general information on a variety of Elemec topics. When searching the web yourself, use a good search engine such as those suggested below.

E-Panorama

A huge site that covers topics ranging from manufacturers to Online journals. This site is one-stop shopping for information about electrical/mechanical engineering and electronics of all kinds. The sections on Motor Control and Automation are particularly good. http://www.epanorama.com

The Instrumentation, Systems and Automation Society

Good for browsing to learn about new advances in the field.
http://www.isa.org/

Control Engineering Online

News and articles on control, instrumentation and automation systems
http://www.controleng.com

Thomas Register

The Thomas Register is a directory of manufacturers, distributors and consultants in all areas of automation and manufacturing. The Register is a great place to find company websites. Limit your search to a type of machine, system or industry to find manufacturers and distributors. Searches can also be defined by geographic area--great if you are looking for a job! This directory is also located in book form in the Library's reference collection.

Web
Searching:

Use the web searching tools below to locate websites on Elemec topics. Be sure to follow the tips.

link to google

Use Google to find general information on a variety of topics. Google ranks "hits" by the amount of times other sites link to them (by Popularity), which can be a pretty good indicator if a site is good. However, new sites or those that are really specialized may not be very "popular" although they offer great information. Be sure to always check two or three search engines when looking for information on the web.

Tips on Google searching:
Use obvious keywords. For instance, if you are looking for information on industrial closed loop controls use a search such as: "closed loop" and "industrial electronics."

link to scirus

Scirus is a collection of websites about science and technology with an academic, scholarly focus.

Tips on searching Scirus:
When using Scirus, It is best to think about your keywords in terms of the whole discipline. So, if you are looking for information on transformers, you should search for Industrial Electricity. Also, using the "Refine Your Search" list of suggested keywords on the right side of your results is really useful.

Link to Open Directory

The web sites in the Open Directory Project are selected and arranged by humans rather than by a computer software program. It is the largest directory of this kind on the Internet. Categories that include Elemec information include Business>Electronics and Electrical, Science>Technology, and Computers>Software>Manufacturing>Automation.
