FAQ's

Why is auto updating so important?

Both your anti-virus software and your operating system should be set to automatically download and install updates on a weekly, if not daily basis. These automatic updates protect you from the vast majority of the viruses, worms, and security attacks that occur. If you are not set up for automatic updates, you are putting your system, and the rest of the College at risk. You'll need to make sure you are getting the latest operating system patches and anti-virus software on your office computer, as well as on any home computer that you use to connect to the Internet.

What happens with the old computers that come out of the labs and offices?

The College has a four year replacement cycle for computers. If an area has a need for a higher end or more current computer, and a computer is replaced prior to the end of the four year cycle, the system is held by IT for either replacement parts or to be put in place when new staff are added.

At the end of four years, the computers are no longer suitable for use at the college. Older systems are more expensive to support and they are not capable of running the latest software, nor is it likely that they being supported by their manufactures for software/security updates. At the time of disposal, the data on the hard drives is erased and a suitable home is located. The majority go to public, in-district K-12 institutions for use in less demanding applications. Others are sold in bulk to recyclers/refurbishers. The College has avoided individual sales because of the high cost/low payback of each transaction. If you are in the market for a used system you can look on the internet at web sites such as http://www.retrobox.com or http://www.ebay.com.

How do I have software installed in a classroom?

Complete a Software Installation/Modification Request Form. Please send your completed requests, the license agreement, and the software to the Manager of Office and Classroom Technology. Please use a separate copy of the form for each software package. Please allow six weeks for the installation of software or data files.

How do I reserve a classroom?

Up to 1 hour and 20 minutes of computer lab time can be booked per class per day by any faculty member that needs access to one of our computer classroom labs. There are two phases to scheduling: Priority Scheduling, in which specific rooms are set aside for specific disciplines, and Open Scheduling, where any faculty member can reserve any room on a first come, first served basis. All classroom scheduling is handled through your division office.
