  • Paul G. Allen Virtual Education Foundation
    The purpose of this foundation is to advance Internet-based distance learning, with support for cost-effective development of high quality multimedia curricula for higher education..
  • Annenberg/CPB
    The Annenberg/CPB was among the first to fund new instructional technologies to enhance the quality and accessibility of education through telecommunications and information technologies.
  • AOL Foundation
    AOL provides free online time to schools and many charities, and supports community technology access centers.
  • Arthur Vining Davis Foundations
    The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations support new methods for using electronic resources to improve higher education systems.
  • Asante Technologies, Inc.
    Asante’s E-rate program awards hardware and software to K-12 schools. Winners are selected based on their application proposals, their vision of how the grant will enhance their school’s educational mission and their need for networking products. Applications are available online.
  • CompuServe
    Offers charities free sites on its network and supports groups that are involved with Internet activities.
  • Computers for Learning
    Donates computers from federal agencies to schools and educational nonprofits. A number of transportation systems and movers transport these computers, free of charge. Volunteers with technical expertise are also available.
  • Computer Learning Foundation
    This international foundation funded by corporate sponsors and individuals serves as a clearinghouse for parents and educators. During “Computer Learning Month” each October, the foundation awards prizes for innovative technology projects. Over $120,000 in technology products are also awarded to the winners of the Technology Planning Sweepstakes to schools which prepare or update their technology plans. Additional awards are given to students in the “Our Town” initiative, for the best designs of a community Web site.

    Provides free e-mail and personal Web pages for educators as well as news and resources.
  • W. K. Kellogg Foundation
    This foundation offers grants in the U.S., Latin America, the Caribbean and southern Africa, and supports the use of telecommunications, distance education and media projects. It awards small planning and start-up grants as well as large multiyear awards.
  • John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation
    This foundation is a long-time supporter of media and new communications technologies and supports their use as integral components of projects to disseminate information and to engage a broad public.
  • John and Mary R. Markel Foundation
    This foundation supports research, development and demonstration projects; advocacy projects which serve the public interest to democratize access to new communications technologies; projects which facilitate the public’s political participation and projects which develop innovative multimedia products and services.
  • Andrew W. Mellon Foundation
    This foundation supports the use of new technologies for scholarly communication, for teaching foreign languages and for libraries. It supports a number of projects to digitize library materials.
  • Alfred P. Sloan Foundation
    This foundation funds initiatives in Asynchronous Learning Networks (ALN). The purpose of the ALN is to support “on-demand,” innovative approaches to curricula and degree programs in a range of subject areas that use multimedia technologies and computer networking for collaborative and self-paced education.
  • Tech Corps
    This organization teams volunteers from technology companies to work with K-12 schools to plan their technology, curriculum and telecommunications infrastructure. Volunteers assist school districts to upgrade schools’ electrical wiring, obtain hardware, install local area networks, develop Web sites, as well as mentoring students and teachers in the use of technology.
  • Technology Opportunities Program (TOP)
    Operated by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration in the Department of Commerce, this annual and highly competitive grants program supports collaborative projects using the Internet and new media.
