Avoiding Timeouts in myCOD
[ Lab Home | Search Labs | IT Home ]

If you are inactive for more than 30 minutes in your myCOD account you will time out. However, myCOD offers a way to avoid timing out.

Email Folders

While you are in any of your email folder listings you can have your session refresh itself automatically. To do this click on the customize link while in email. From there you'll see a setting titled, 'Automatically Refresh E-mail Listing'. Your options are to have your session auto-refresh every 5, 10, 15, or 30 minutes. So long as you don't lose your internet connection your account will continue to refresh itself as long as you stay in any of your email folders.

Read your email in a new window

Within the customization area of email there is an option titled, 'Open E-mail By'. One of the options available there is to 'Open email in a new window'. This will allow you to have any email you open to be read in a separate window. While you're reading this email, or multiple emails, your main browser will still be in your email folder and auto-refresh at the rate you set. The open email can stay open as long as you have an active internet connection. Actually, so long as you don't lose your internet connection or log out of your session these emails can stay open for days if you choose.

Compose email in a new window ("Detach this page")

First, while in your email there is the 'compose' link on the left side of the page. When you use this option to compose an email it replaces your email folder. If you compose an email here for over 30 minutes you will timeout. But, at the bottom of the page there is a option titled, 'Detach this page'. By clicking this option the email you are writing will 'detach' from you main browser window into it's own separate window. There you can continue to compose your email for as long as you wish or until you log out or lose your internet connection. Your main browser window will automatically return to your email folder where it will continue to refresh itself which allows you to not time out.

Compose email in a new window (Selecting Compose mail from toolbar)

The fourth box from the left of the toolbar at the top of your browser is a compose email icon. If you hover your mouse pointer above this icon it's title will appear. This compose option will automatically open your email compose in a new window. By composing your email in a separate window there are other benefits. Not only will your account continue to refresh itself but you'll have the freedom to continue to use your account while composing your email. You can also have multiple emails in a compose status at the same time.
